Tales August 2006
Out of season action!!!!
A strong north wind greeted sailors on Wednesday 16th
August and whilst most in town and the media were
distracted by events on Great Ocean Road, an incident
occurred at the Apollo Bay Harbour.
Some members of the Apollo Bay Sailing Club with long
memories went down to the Club House to ensure that
it had not gone sailing off again on its own and were
relieved to find it anchored to the ground. But the
Commodore’s pride and joy, Interlude, had slipped
its mooring and beached itself in front of the Club
House.
It was decided to wait until high tide to free the
vessel (common sense is highly valued down at the
Apollo Bay Sailing Club) and perhaps the wind would
die down by then. No such luck by high tide, 3:00pm,
the wind was still blowing 38knots (70km/h) but Ian
Marriner and Staff had prepared and with assistance
from Kerry and Leo, John bordered the hapless Interlude.
The engine started, and with a tow from the Harbour
Staff, Interlude was soon free of the rocks and made
for the safety of the Low Landing. Thanks to John
Lindsey for replacing the damaged mooring on Thursday
morning.
By the way John Marriner has denied the rumour that
he was converting Interlude to an off the beach dinghy!!!!
The moral of this ditty is during the off season check
your boat and remember to repair or replace all that
gear before the Season starts on Saturday, 14th October
2006.
