TONS OF TALES TO TELL
MUCH WIND – NO SWELL!
If you own a sail boat and you weren’t out on
the water last Saturday, don’t read any further.
You’ll turn green with envy at the good times
had by all in the bracing conditions. The wind blew
a steady 20-25 knots from the southwest all afternoon
on a day when everyone was a winner. Here are the headlines.
Sista is Mad about the buoy
The Sista Mermaid crew learned two valuable lessons
on the day. The first was not to believe fellow sailors
about the wind strength, the 2nd – take care
when approaching anchor buoys in a stiff breeze. Seriously
whoever told them it was due to blow up to 50 knots
should be keel-hauled!
Blaster bends Mast
Master blaster Mat Armstrong thought he had the whole
show in the bag until the elements demonstrated some
faults in the design, construction or installation
of his mast. In any event, the damn thing got bent
which would send a lesser skipper straight to the
pub.
Eavesdropper gets ducking
Always keen to pick up on the latest gossip, (Was
that a compliment I heard?) Peter I-can-sail-without-
a-rudder Geekie did a quick about face to catch the
conversational drift on a competitors craft and wound
up in the drink for his trouble. A most deserving
tool of the week!
Hats off to skipper
In a spontaneous demonstration of admiration, the
crew of the day’s winning boat – Tumbleweed,
threw caution to the wind and hats in the air only
to discover that it really was blowing 25 knots and
alas the hats now sleep with the fishes. Actually
the bloody wind blew 3 hats from the crowns of 3 crew,
but we never let the truth get in the way of a good
story.
Summary
Miss Molly broke a fingernail. Mrs Zappa nearly celebrated
race end with a ducking and Skipper Angelique had
cabin boy Gary panting all afternoon. Tumbleweed won
on handicap by a skinny margin from La Boehme followed
by Interlude, Not Your Average White Boat and Zappa.
