Tales 14th January 2006
Quite an eventful day out on the water!!
The course which was set for a Westerly wind needed
to be changed to cater for the Southerly wind that
was blowing at 15-20 knots. Three marks had to be
lifted and moved in a choppy sea – hard work
for two old fellas.
A competitive fleet of 14 yachts contested the 2 starts.
Keel boats first, dinghies and catamaran classes second.
The first race of the 2 race short course series had
many great tussles. Bill Gross and crew on Tumbleweed
led the keel boats over the finish line. It had to
be her clean bottom that did it (after a short trip
up the Slipway).
Ian Leary & Leo Di Cecco on Windswept took line
honours from Not Your Average White Boat (Peter Geekie
and Stewie Matthews) in the dinghies/cat class. While
at the back of the fleet Paddle Pop (the Jenners)
and Hell’n’High Water (the Bournes) had
a great race against each other.
However the 2nd race was not to be, as the Rescue
Boat was needed to right an upside down Catamaran
of Paul Shannon & crew. This exercise took a while.
Thanks to the Surf Club for their assistance. AlsoGeeks
and Stewie on NYAWB lost their rudder and had to be
towed in by the Rescue Boat.
The gaff of the day goes to Colin (the fire fighter)
Coleman who lost a sail off his boat whilst towing
his boat home from the harbour. Lucky for him his
friendly neighbour, Ian Leary, was following behind.
Results for Saturday’s Race are:
1st Windswept Ian Leary & Leo Di Cecco
2nd Town Bike John Lindsey & Crew
3rd Interlude John Marriner & Crew
Congratulations to Ian Leary and Leo Di Cecco on Windswept,
winners of the Short Course Series.
The Apollo Bay Sailing Club thanks Hanson Petroleum
for their support of the club and the rescue boat.
