Our Learn To Sailors headed out the harbour
again this week in a fresh and gusty 20 knot plus
wind. It was a great effort for these kids, and a
testament to the skills Matt and Pete have passed
on. John Marriner, with the adult Learn To Sailors,
put on an impressive sail by seemingly nearly capsizing
his boat! Nieka was sure the mast tip hit the water.
Way to go, John!
The main race started with the fresh westerly wind
still blowing 15/20 knots. A great sailing day awaited.
The start was exciting with two boats crashing into
each other. “In The Pink” with Mandy and
Peter on board collided with her brother, Gary. It
looked impressive for the spectators. Mandy and Peter
were involved in another drama later on, sinking the
Flying 15 and having to be towed into the harbour.
Team Smith again sailed a creditable race by staying
in front of Captain Col and Doug in Miss Molly. Randall
and crew had trouble with their kite, and sailed off
to Skenes Creek to say hello to Mary.
Great to see Scotty and Dave out on the Cat. Big
effort on a day that was marginal, and to see them
finish was fantastic.
Of the keel boats, new dad Pete Depeller sailed a
great race finishing in front of the other two big
boats. Tumbleweed’s crew were too busy opening
up a bottle of red thinking they had finished the
race, but with another lap to go and Rex spilling
some of the contents on his white shirt, they came
away with a d.n.f. for their troubles. You would think
with that many crew on board, someone could count!
The Bayleaf “tool of the week” award
was hotly contested with no less than 6 capsizes during
the day, but the award goes to Captain Col for nearly
dropping his boat off his new “you beaut”
trailer on the boat ramp.
Life is good, be happy, come sailing.
