Tell Tales 2nd February 2008
Saturday saw the end of the calm that has wallowed around the Sailing Club on Saturday’s all season. Whilst it was not a howler it was sunny steady and blissful. Ten boats presented at the started line. The fleet’s brilliant enthusiasm was rewarded by duty officers Burnang and Peter Geekie who set a clean course, with help from Stu Matthews, in the relative steady conditions.

With just one race there was plenty of time after the briefing to sure up the course so that good reaches were possible on each lap. Being the first boat out Lids and Leo from the The Bay Leaf were well on the way to winning the joy divison prize of having the most fun sailing. They were reaching about under spinnaker bashing through waves checking the course. Race duty officer Burang was holding himself well in the co pilot seat as the rescue boat followed The Bay Leaf around the course but all this was set to change. The punters were quite keen on the 2pm race which was started on time and without incident excepting Lids and Leo casually crossing the line 10 seconds early. They were recalled and the rest of the fleet had a clean start.

Given the stable conditions the race ran as a clock; smooth and predictable. The small boats went quick and the big boats went slow. Burnang (the 12 week old puppy and Rescue Duty co pilot) was sick with excitement, or was it motion? In any case he checked out for the rest of the race for a post sickness sleep. The kind of sleep you can only get once you’ve given everything you’re got!

Shayne and John Lindsey on Town Bike gave it all they had to sail a smokin’ race. The Bay Leaf boat, Windswept, looked the fastest with its hiked out and cuddled up crew. Tumbleweed sailed a long race. Their yardstick is a ‘wishful visionless estimate’ based on social good will rather than true sailing performance. Cole Coleman and Doug Williams on Miss Molly are achieving a much better measure of their boat finishing much closer toward the front than the back.

There are over 100 photos (and some video) of the race to view on line at: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/geeksnieks/ApolloBaySailingClubRacing2ndFeb2008 Have a look at the trim of each boat (sails, hull and crew position) and see if it explains the following results:

Thanks to Russell Smith for delivery and maintenance of the Rescue Boat.
Thanks to Bob Hansen for cleaning the club house each week.
Thanks to Jeffery Richardson for the web space that gives us a place in the world wide web www.greatoceanroad.com.au/sailing
Note:
The dinghies used in the learn to sail program a couple of years ago were sold to families in the community. If you have one, why not bring it down to have fun with your kids on Saturday mornings. The weather has been perfect for learning to sail.

Life is good. Come Sailing! ?
