Tell Tales 5th December 2005

With a fresh 15-20knots Westerly the learn to sail program had fun in the harbour, their boat skills improving all the time. Pete and Matt did a great job with the learners, and the Commodore took a harem out on Interlude into the bay for a run.
The wind direction stayed westerly for the main race with gusts up to 25knots and rain squalls interspersed with sunny periods. The course was set in the bay, as the weather was expected to worsen during the day which luckily did not eventuate.
Ex Commodore Mandy made the start with seconds to spare after rig and boom problems on the boat ramp. It was great to see learn to sailors Jeff Wright and John Gardiner out in the mirror in daunting conditions and although they were a DNF, they showed excellent boat handling before their retirement.
Pete Geekie and Matt Armstrong duelled with each other for most of the first half of the race until Matt and Garry broke a goose neck in the gusty conditions and had to retire
Lid’s sailed with Tom Leary and Will Eyers as usual crew Leo was unavailable, but was forced to retire with the crew suffering from cold after forgetting their spray jackets.
The big boats had a great start with Jubilation leading the way, closely shadowed by Interlude, a great duel ensued.
With Cpt Maddy at the helm, Jubilation was attracted to a boy sorry buoy, resulting in a penalty. Unfortunately for Interlude they couldn’t capitalise and Jubilation took the line after some great sailing.
Thanks to all on the day for taking the learn to sail participants ou,t a great day was had by all.
