Tell Tales 29th October 2005

Well it finally looked like the long suffering sailors of Apollo Bay were actually going to get a sail. Saturday’s 12-15 knot westerly breeze was just the ticket for some fine sailing conditions.

Ian Learey, the club’s race master, called for a starboard course. So with the start line set well out to sea this necessitated a beat up to the top mark situated off the beach, then a tack to starboard to the wing mark, followed by a broad reach back to the bottom mark to complete the triangular course. The three keel boats were to be first over the line, followed 5 minutes later by the dinghies, but Bill Gross in Tumbleweed was so excited in demonstrating to his crew the amazing abilities of his new sail, it appeared that he actually forgot about the race and was heading off towards Cape Patton. Not so Peter Deppeler in Jubilation, who got off to a perfect start closely followed by Nick Martin in Manitou.

Back in the dinghy fleet Sweatshop was living up to its name as Matt & Gary worked hard to peg back the 5 minute lead Jubilation had, while at the same time fending off a challenge by the Goodisons in their fast Hobie 16. Shayne Lindsey showed that all the time spent at sailing clinics hasn’t been wasted by leading a number of the more senior sailors around the course in his little Laser which could put on quite a turn of speed. Colin Coleman & Doug Williams sailing Miss Molly showed a remarkable improvement in their spinnaker work (no more broken spinnaker poles!) but it wasn’t enough to defeat the well oiled team of Russell & Andrew Smith sailing In The Blue who had the 470 performing at its best.

Out in the front line an ongoing David & Goliath battle between Jubilation (the big Farr 38), the Hobie 16 and Sweatshop (505 dinghy) ended with the Hobie 16 crossing the line only minutes ahead of Sweatshop and Jubilation.

The rescue boat crew of Ian Learey & John Marriner are still red faced after being caught out towing one of the race marks around the course, having forgotten to untie it from the back of the rescue boat. But like a marriage, when two people are involved you can always blame the other person. No point in fighting over the Tool of the Week award fellas, I think you can share it! Perhaps we should fit rear view mirrors to the rescue boat!

Corrected time placings for the club championship:
1st Jubilation
2nd Sweatshop
3rd Hobie 16

The club gratefully acknowledges the support of the sponsors Leo Di Cecco Plumbing and Bayleaf Café. .
