| News Letter August
2005 Well, the AGM is over
and the club now has a new committee, or to be more
correct, a reshuffling of roles but with the inclusion
of three new faces – Colin Coleman and Peter
Bourne as general committee, and Mandy Harrison as
social secretary.
The new committee is as follows:
Commodore – John Marriner,
Vice-Commodore – Russell Smith, Secretary –
Chris Marriner, Treasurer – Sandra Skene, Handicapper
– Bill Gross, Race Management – Leo Di
Cecco & Ian Learey, Club Captain – Leo Di
Cecco, Sponsorship – Mandy Millar, Training
Officer – Peter Geekie, Social Secretary –
Mandy Harrison, Safety Officer – Matt Armstrong,
General Committee – Colin Coleman, Peter Bourne.
After 3 years as Commodore, and 1 year as Vice-Commodore,
Mandy has elected to take a much deserved break, but
will remain on the committee as the Sponsorship officer.
Under Mandy’s stewardship the club has undergone
many positive changes. From the first day that Mandy
and Lisa turned up to sail In The Pink it was obvious
that Mandy was not going to sit on the sidelines and
let others do all the work. Her enthusiasm and dedication
to the club and its members has been an inspiration
to us all, and to the junior sailors in particular.
Mandy will shortly be heading off to the warm tropical
waters of the Pacific and I’m sure we can look
forward to a story of her sailing exploits in the
Tongan Islands.
In what must surely be one of the major achievements
in the ABSC’s history, at a presentation night
held at Sandringham Yacht Club last week, our club
took out equal first prize in the VicHealth Yacht
Club of the Year awards – a fantastic achievement
for our small club especially when you realise we
were up against clubs with million dollar budgets.
The $1500 prize money was almost an anti-climax!
The committee are putting together the coming season’s
program and this will be forwarded to all members
on completion. This year we are hoping to include
the Wye River Challenge – a morning sail to
Wye River, perhaps lunch at the Rookery Nook,
and an afternoon sail home. Geeks is offering to
lead the way. Bill Gross has generously offered to
sponsor the appropriately named “Hungarian Fishmongers
Championship” based on the best of 7 races (real
races that is, not the “mickey mouse”
short course stuff!)
Matt has put together a great submission for some
grant money and was successful in securing enough
to purchase a new 3 metre inflatable for the Learn
To Sail program. I’m sure this will be much
appreciated by the long suffering users of our present
rubber duck. Another bonus for those hard working
members involved in the LTS program is the construction
of a second 3-boat trailer presently under way, which
will save much to-ing and fro-ing on Saturday mornings.
The club is hoping to secure the services of Yachting
Victoria coach, John Moody, and will invite him down
to the bay early in the sailing season. On his last
visit he was able to impart much valuable knowledge.
This is a great opportunity to hone up on our sailing
skills.
On the 2nd, 3rd & 4th September, 10 club members
will be attending a Power Boat Handling Clinic at
Royal Geelong Yacht Club. This is a necessary step
in gaining the coaching accreditation necessary for
the running of the LTS program.
The monthly committee meetings have now been changed
from the third Wednesday of the month to the first
Wednesday. It seems one of the committee had trouble
remembering any number greater than one! These meetings
are open to all members of the club, so if you have
something you would like to talk about – come
along.
As we are hoping to continue putting out a newsletter
on a reasonably regular basis, this may present an
opportunity for members to advertise some of that
unwanted boating junk, wet suits etc. that we all
seem to accumulate – so if you would like to
flog it off, get in touch with Secretary, Chris Marriner
on 52374227 or jcmarriner@bigpond.com
- and she will bung it in the classifieds.
