News Letter - October 2007

Well, another season is upon us, I think our 21st, somewhat of an achievement for such a small club.

As you may be aware there have been a few changes to the committee. Firstly thank you’s all round to John & Chris Marriner for their huge effort over the years. Chris, I think, has held every position except commodore, and John’s commitment to the club has been overwhelming and I am glad John is still on the committee.
Also thanks must go to Sandra Skene, she has been our financial guide over a number of years now. We wish her every success in the future.
Thanks also go to Bill Gross for his work as handicapper over the past two years.

The committee is made up of Russell Smith, Commodore (don’t laugh), ably assisted by Vice-Commodore Peter Bourne, Secretary Matt Armstrong, Treasurer Helen Davis, Committee people Peter Geekie, John Marriner, Colin Coleman, and we welcome back Bob Hansen, also Gary Millar as handicapper, and social duo Susie McBride and Margaret Findlay.

Let’s hope for a few more sailing days than what we got last year.

The committee intends, over the course of the year, to keep you as well informed as possible about events, updates and workings of the club. Given the fact that we live in an electronic age, most of this will be done through emails, newsletters, updates on web site.

Most of you may be aware that we have another yngling. We hope that these boats will be out on a regular basis over the season.

A few items I would like the members to be made aware of. With the amount of children about at the end of the day it would be appreciated if the grassed area be kept clear of cars. The Flying Fifteens and fireballs are more than welcome to use this area to rig and derig as they have in the past. All other members, please keep area clear, no cars parked there during the day. There are activities planned during the year so keep off the grass.

In the past the role of handicapper has come with the general ribbing that most of us have done. If at any time anybody has concerns about the way the handicapping is done, please do not air your opinions openly, put them in writing, come along to meetings. The last thing we want is people’s concerns aired openly.

You will also receive your program. Read it, take note of when you are on duty, do not wait till the last minute to get a replacement. Every assistance will be given to you in the operation of the rescue boat, course laying, race procedure. At all times your safety is paramount and the safety of the members on the water. If you require help, ask for it.

In the past start time reared it’s ugly head – what time do we start? Who goes first? Keel or dinghy?
THIS IS THE PROCEDURE – AT 1.55 PM THE COUNTDOWN FOR THE DINGHIES BEGINS, AT 2.00 PM THE RACE STARTS. THE 2.00 PM SIGNAL ALSO SIGNALS THE COUNTDOWN FOR KEEL BOATS, THEY START AT 2.05 PM.

Race briefings will be at 12.45 pm – your responsibility to be there.

Our social duo, Susie & Margaret, have lots planned for the year so where possible lend assistance.

We are a small club so any assistance you can provide would be appreciated, don’t just sit back and let somebody else do it.

Looking forward to seeing you on the water 20th October.

Russell Smith
Life is good, be happy, come sailing
