News Letter - July
2006
G’day everyone, just a short note to let you
know what’s happening in the club.
First off, the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will
be held on Friday 11th August 7.30 pm at the Krambruk
Room, Apollo Bay Hotel. Hope to see as many members
there as possible. Why don’t you come early
and have a meal with us.
PRESENTATION NIGHT - A great night
was had at the Krambruk Room in May. Shayne Lindsey
gave a great presentation on being part of the Victorian
Youth Squad, and that was followed by a very interesting
talk and slide show by Denise & Michael Hooke
on their recent sailing trip to Antarctica.

TEAMS EVENT – QUEENSCLIFF
– This turned out to be a fantastic weekend
with Saturday night at the pub socialising, then a
great day of teams racing on the Sunday. We can see
why Geeks is so keen to have these events in Apollo
Bay. Our team consisted of Team Leader Peter Geekie,
Russell and Andrew Smith, Peter Bourne, Gary Millar
and Doug Williams. Chris and I were the “cheer
squad”.
HOT DOG STALL – As our main
fundraiser for the year, this was a bit of a disappointment.
This was not due to lack of support from club members
but was due to the supply of an inappropriate marquee
for the community food stall holders. Our takings
were well down on previous years and showed a profit
of approximately $3,000 for the weekend. We have had
very productive discussions with the Music Festival
committee and they have promised that we will have
a better set up for next year.
MODEL BOAT CHALLENGE – Matt
Armstrong has put together a fantastic event pairing
adults and children together to face the challenge
of building a model boat up to 80cm long and costing
under $20, that can be sailed in the Apollo Bay harbour.
Matt’s enthusiasm is very infectious and he
now has a committee working on this project. Matt
was successful in gaining a grant from the Colac Otway
Shire to fund this project. Details of this event
can be found on the Sailing Club’s website at
www.greatoceanroad.com.au/sailing
2006/07 SAILING PROGRAM –
We are in the process of putting together next season’s
sailing program and this will be sent out as soon
as it is finalised.
CLUBROOMS - Sandra & Chris have
had a spring cleaning session in the clubrooms and
they now look much better. If only we could keep the
mice out!
NAIDOC WEEK – On Friday July
21st at 1.00 pm there will be a Flag Raising Ceremony
and free bbq at the clubrooms to celebrate Naidoc
week 2006.
This is organised by the Southern Otway Indigenous
People as a celebration of their culture and heritage.
Cheers
Commodore John
